Whatever it takes…

Posted by Meryl on 10/06/08 at 01:32 PM

If we think outside the box, can we change the cycles that plague urban environments? Geoffrey Canada thinks so and has committed himself to making the changes needed for success in Harlem.

This past weekend I had the good fortune to listen to one of my favorite radio programs, This American Life. As always, I enjoyed the thought-provoking story and was encouraged by the following excerpt in which Paul Tough reports on the Harlem Children’s Zone, and its CEO and president, Geoffrey Canada. Among the project’s many facets is Baby College, an 8-week program where young parents and parents-to-be learn how to help their children get the education they need to be successful. Tough’s just-published book about Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem’s Children Zone is called Whatever It Takes. This is a perfect example of thinking outside the box to recreate the norm in urban neighborhoods. Click on the title, Going Big, to listen to the episode...you’ll be glad you did!
