HPV Vaccine Promoted in Kentucky and Texas

Thank you to Feministing.com  for pointing me to this story and the two articles mentioned below. The movement to vaccinate young women against HPV and reduce their risk of cervical cancer is gaining strength. Legislation to mandate that girls receive the HPV vaccine has been proposed in Texas and in Kentucky.

MySA.com describes the HPV vaccination bills that will be introduced into both houses of the Texas state legislature this session. The headline "Bills would require 6th grade girls to get HPV vaccine" is somewhat misleading; the article later notes that "parents would be able to officially opt out by applying for an exemption."

The bill in the Kentucky legislature takes a different tact. Its sponsor, State Representative Kathy Stein, aims to eliminate a provision in Kentucky that allows parents to opt-out of vaccinating their children "on religious grounds." See All Headline News.
