A Faith Based Demand For Equality in Public Education
Speaking out for equality in public education is considered a faith based moral issue by many religions such as, United Church of Christ, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Catholic and Jewish. But the UU voice is silent about;
- the achievement gap in public schools,
- the enormous number of high school dropouts (+1 million annually),
- the pipeline to prison that snares so many dropouts,
- the hunger and homelessness experienced by school children,
- the waste of so many human minds.
The reason may be that many faiths can rely on their individual creeds to define their beliefs. Their grounding is clear and there is time and motivation for advocacy. But each UU must spend time developing an individual faith. For instance, I have heard it said that the Ten Commandments are ten suggestions for UUs.
While UUs are generous to favorite charities and support equal marriage rights, and certain immigration and environmental issues, most turn a blind eye to the challenges faced by millions of our children who are future voters and might become members of our UU faith.
Promise the Children volunteers declare that children and parents desperately need support. Please join us (http://www.promisethechldrenuu.org/) in demanding equality in public education
