Children are shortchanged by budget cuts

imageYes we need a Circle of Protection around our children. They are harmed by budget cuts in many ways. Cutting their time in school is likely to damage their future as much or more than our budget deficit. Children need all the time that they can get to learn enough to compete in what is now an international job market.

One thousand of our schools nationally have increased time at school in order to help prepare our children for the future, but many schools are reducing learning time. For more information see http://www.timeandlearning.org/

Budget cuts in federal funding to the states are resulting in teacher layoffs and larger class size. Often the music, arts, technology and gym programs are cut as well. In addition, some schools have shortened the school day, some have reduced the number of school days in the year, and others have closed schools for one day each week. Not only are our children shortchanged, but also they are alone and unsupervised at home for far too much time while parents struggle with part time or full time jobs.
