Sacrificing the Poor to Balance the Budget
“It’s movement time,” said Marion Wright Edelman, 72, a longtime children’s advocate, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a MacArthur “genius award” fellowship. “It’s time to build an irresistibly loud and adult voice for children.”
Spending cuts that target the poor are not consistent with Christian teachings say 75 Professors at Catholic University – Catholic Professors Criticize Boehner in Letter .
In addition leaders of more than a dozen Christian denominations and organizations have joined together to form a Circle of Protection around programs that support hungry and poor people at home and abroad that are subject to cuts by a vote of the House Republicans.
The House budget will cut important programs supported by Promise the Children such as;
- Food Assistance including SNAP, (food stamps), and free/reduced-price school meals,
- Low-income Child Care & Early Education including Headstart,
- Children’s Low-income Health Care including Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIPP).
These cuts target our most vulnerable, young children who need sufficient food and health care, and access to early education in order to have the opportunity to learn.

If you would like to voice your opinion on any of these programs;
Contact both your local and federal legislator, ask to speak to the aide who knows about food assistance, children’s health care, or early education, inform that aide of your opinion and commitment, and find out how to persist in informing your legislator when a vote is being taken.
Or sign up at Promise the Children and we will let you know when votes are coming up on these particular national issues that support children.
Happy Spring! Becky Richardson
