ISSUE FOR ACTION

Food Stamp Program Should be Reauthorized and Expanded

The Food Stamp Program is essential to the well-being of children in this country. Children need nutritious food in order to learn and grow. Providing children with the food they need is one of the most basic ways we can care for children in our society.

The Food Stamp Program, which is part of the 2007 Farm Bill, provides low-income families with resources to buy food. The 2007 Farm Bill is up for reauthorization by the U.S. Congress this year.

Promise the Children supports reauthorizing the 2007 Farm Bill, and making improvements to the Food Stamp Program in the process. Over 25 million people rely on the Food Stamp Program. Yet millions more are in need of nutritional assistance. As a recent statement from America’s Second Harvest makes clear, more low-income people should be allowed to participate in FSP, and the program should give more generous support to participants. To find out more about how the Food Stamp Program must be strengthened, please read this brief report from America’s Second Harvest.
