The Rennie Center: Labor-Management-Community Collaboration

Massachusetts’ successful Race to the Top proposal presented an aggressive plan for improving school leadership and educator excellence, including instituting a new statewide framework for teacher evaluation and aligning instruction with assessment results. Achieving these goals requires a tectonic shift in school culture; all stakeholders involved in teaching and learning are being asked to reevaluate their daily practices to align with coming reforms. At the heart of this work will be establishing successful labor-management relations to foster collaboration and overcome key differences in order to improve student achievement.

On Tuesday, February 28, the Rennie Center will release its case study, Labor-Management-Community Collaboration in Springfield Public Schools, at the Omni Parker House Hotel in Boston from 9:00 to 11:00 am. We will share key insights gained from the study of a successful labor management collaboration in a major urban school district and feature remarks from individuals central to this work, including:

Andrew Bundy, Partner, Community Matters Tim Collins, President, Springfield Education Association Dr. Alan Ingram, Superintendent, Springfield Public Schools

The event will close with a panel of state and district leaders in labor and management sharing their thoughts on how lessons in collaboration may be applied to other districts and across the state. The panel will include:

The Rennie Center’s Labor-Management Initiative
The Rennie Center has been engaged in both the study and the practice of labor-management collaboration and innovation in Massachusetts public schools since 2002. In 2011, building on significant experience in applied labor-management collaboration practice with a variety of Massachusetts school districts and labor unions, the Rennie Center partnered with Community Matters to plan and launch a new venture in labor-management innovation, called Collaborating for Student Achievement (CSA). CSA will facilitate high-impact collaboration between school administrators, teachers’ union leaders, and community leaders. Its mission is to expand the effective use of labor-management-community collaboration to advance student achievement in public schools.
